SEMINAR AIMS This project has been created for A level music students at York College. It is primarily of relevance for the performing and composition components of the EDEXCEL A level course, and it is hoped that the resource created will be of value to all 'A' level music courses and anyone wishing to further their knowledge of new music. The project can be divided into three aspects: 1) Discussion between Performer and student via e-mail on issues such as the understanding and performance of the works to be featured and what it is like to be a performer of 20th Century music written for 'cello and/or piano. 2) The creation of a resource through research and discussion for the works and composers featured. 3) The seminar discussions at the Ferens Art Gallery which will also become part of the resource retrospectively. New music is always a challenge for an audience especially a young audience unfamiliar with the musical language used. The pre-concert preparation is an attempt to demystify and prepare the ground.
