Nigel Bartram:- Three Recollections 2003 (first perf.)
A recollection can be a recall to memory by an effort or,
to absorb in mystical contemplation. The pieces are for solo
piano and fixed support (CD) with the pianist performing both
fully scored and partially scored materials. The aim is to
allow the performer opportunity to contemplate (through
improvisation) on material heard previously but within given
parameters.
1) The 'Visit'. These are mood recollections formed whilst reading
'The Visit' by Friedrich Durenmatt. The result is potential
incidental music for the opening scene.
2)Thornton. The inspiration is a dawn chorus visit to Thornton
(near York). This recollection consists of actual recorded sounds
mixed with sounds of a more exotic nature.
3)Whitby. The sampled sounds are recorded during a visit to whitby
at 'New Year'. Ice, snow, sea and other water sounds are used as part
of a rhythmic collage. The piano melody is simple above a constantly
shifting and modulating harmonic world. The result is a Grieg-like
sound world with 20th century extended harmonies.
