E.A.E. presented a workshop preceeding the son et lumiere 'Chaos of Rainbows' by John Stead. Fractal geometry was used in this son et lumiere, and E.A.E. led a workshop for pupils and students from local schools and 6th. form colleges, in which methods of creating fractal images were explained and explored. If you would like to host a workshop, please email us for further information by clicking here. Below is the overview presented to the Ferens Art Gallery Education Dept: Workshop Overview: To compliment one of Hulls' most ancient church sites - St.Marys', Lowgate, John Stead and members of the Electro-Acoustic Ensemble will be installing a son et lumiere inside the church for an evening performance of 'A Chaos of Rainbows' on Tuesday 15th. July. As so much interest has been given to the subject of fractals (the Mandelbrot Set for example) an educational workshop will be offered to explain something of what these amazing geometries are about, and give the opportunity for people to create and print their own fractals to take away at the end of the workshop (2 groups of 12/16 people can be accommodated at each of the two 2 hour workshop sessions). A disk containing the software used to create the fractals will be given free of charge to each person attending the workshop with guidelines for installation and use, so that further exploration of the world of fractals can be continued after the introductory talk and workshop. The format of the workshops will be in the form of a brief introductory talk about fractal geometry and its use in art. Four computers will be available for use, with guidance and support from 3 members of EAE who will be there (Pete Jordan, Gavin Kauffman and John Stead). Near the end of each session, each participant can choose a fractal image they would like to take away with them, and this will be printed, in colour on 'Mellotex' type paper. The workshops will be held on a date to be set prior to the performance of 'FRACTALS', in the Ferens Art Gallery, when everyone attending will be encouraged to come to the performance at St. Marys' Lowgate. Where workshop used as part of a GCSE Programme: Making Use of Information Technology is a vital requirement for each National Curriculum subject. The Attainment targets for the IT curriculum include 'the communication and handling of information', and being able to 'plan, develop and modify sets of instructions' .Students will be able to demonstrate these in a creative context through the generation of Fractals. Although Art/Design is not compulsory beyond Key stage 3, the targets form part of the GCSE Art/ Design syllabus, and could provide a stimulus for a GCSE Expressive Arts individual project. In addition the students will be able to evaluate the work they produce easily, as all students will receive the software and a printed image. Additionally, E.A.E. have hosted an gallery of some of the best fractal geometries created by people attending the workshop, as well as documentary photographs of the workshop.
