Nigel Bartram
Composer, performer and teacher of music at York College

As a composer I am chiefly concerned with writing music for the piano. I work through different musical genres including works for solo piano, jazz compositions, and electro-acoustic compositions for piano and environmental sounds. The material for this has hitherto been pre-prepared but my most recent concern is to move away from a completely known sound world and write for live keyboard (laptop sampler) and piano.
My musical style is influenced by French piano music, film music and jazz.
I am an enthusiastic performer and am actively developing a small but focused New Music Repertoire which I actively seek to integrate into the Electro-acoustic Ensemble programming. I am also a jazz performer believing that improvising skills are important to my compositional method in the same way that playing Bach is an essential contributor to my technical ability as a pianist.
I perform many of my own compositions but am seeking collaboration now with other musicians which will be an important part of future work.
Finally as a music and music technology teacher at York College I have skills which I hopefully bring to the EAE education programme. My ‘creed’ is to aim to break down musical barriers and involve participants in the work of the ensemble in a meaningful way which will inform their future artistic ambitions.
