Micro theme, variations and fugale - for 'cello, piano and live electronics (2000)
First performed on 17th. July 2000 at the Live Arts Space, Ferens Art Gallery, Hull, U.K.
'cello: Gabriel Prynn
piano: Stanislaw Hansel
electronics: John Stead
Notes:
This work has been written especially for the concert and is to be performed by the composer and the 'cellist Gabriel Prynn. The work is in two short movements and is dynamically very soft. A 2-3 second reverberation time is set for both instruments and this remains throughout as an added aesthetic. The piece opens with a micro Theme on the piano, which is preluded by a signal. 5 variations follow for the piano, whilst the 'cello has an ostinato texture consisting often of irregular durations to maintain a tension between the instruments.
The fugale subject is introduced by the 'cello and a contrasting countersubject can be discerned in the piano. A link into the final section is via a very soft micro-codetta. The 'cello ostinato is then heard again, this time by the piano and as the composer says: "this acts as a kind of pedal point to 'wind down the subject' and in fact the whole piece."

micro sonata (1996)
First performed on 5th. July 2003 at the Live Arts Space, Ferens Art Gallery, Hull, U.K.
keyboard: Stanislaw Hansel
Notes:
The Micro Sonata (Jan. - July 1996) is an attempt to create a structure coming out of symphonic and sonata experience but creating tensions out of the mental forcefields created by my sequences.
The piece was written in two pairs of movements. The first movement in each pair acts as a Prime to establish the energies whereas the complimentary second movement is there as an irrelevant piece of material enabling us to feel the energies already established as coming through more strongly. The "micro" of the title refers to my further interest in putting as much information as possible into the smallest duration of time.
