John Stead

Composer and son et lumiere artist

My work comprises concert music, environmental sound installations, son et lumieres, film music and web media, and has been commissioned by such as Hull City Council, Land Securities plc., Barratt plc., Brookes Ltd., Durham University Union and Emote. My work has been performed around the U.K. including Hull, Huddersfield, Nottingham, Manchester, Derby, Durham, Lastingham and London.

I have worked on diverse music projects with the sound artist Max Eastley, composer Stanislaw Hansel, composer/performer Nigel Bartram, photographer Sarah Daniels, performance/installation artist Karen Rann, cellist Gabriel Prynn (Trio Fibonacci), and most recently with Anne Parouty, resulting in a BAFTA Digital Arts Award in 2004.

Son et lumieres have been commissioned to celebrate openings of civil engineering projects, entertainments for swimming pools, as well as sacred space installations - gaining a Gustav Holst Foundation Award in 1994.

A love of nature, natural sounds and sacred music results in a palette which includes transformed sounds (through the use of computer technology) synthetic sounds, natural environmental sounds and conventional instrumentation.

I am Artistic Director of the Electro-Acoustic Ensemble.
