Reverberation:
The result of the many reflections of a sound which can occur in a
given enclosed space. A sound reflected from a surface reaches our
ears later than a direct sound. Some surfaces (e.g soft materials or
an audience!) will absorb some of the sound energy and the reflected
sound is generally weaker. Because each delayed sound wave arrives
within a short period of time and there are many different kinds of
reflections, we do not perceive them as copies of the direct sound.
This distinguishes reverberation from delay. Reverb allows us to
simulate various acoustic conditions.
