It is my intention to react in some way to what both staff and spectators/shoppers tell me. My response is not intended to be programmatic but abstract. At this point I can only say that I shall be looking for points in conversations or convergences for which I may be able to create a plane or sequence in the music; this sequence would not be intended as illustration but as a marker of a particular direction in conversations. Other stimulae to which I shall respond will be the outdoor nature of the stadium site and the indoor nature of Tesco's. The outside site will probably lead to my creating an installation which will respond to parameters in the weather, and still be intended to enhance the enclosure by marking the space musically. A probable outcome for the stadium will be a piece of music consisting of 5 tracks, each track played by a separate CD player and mixed live through the use of a small mixer. Simple sensors measuring the weather will enable the person doing the mixing to decide when to bring out or fade down the different tracks, creating a changing environment. The piece will probably be played over the speaker system as spectators enter and exit the stadium. My meetings with the staff and shoppers at Tesco's will seek to find as many instances of concepts of recycling as possible. I shall use the musical material from the stadium piece and recycle it to create a related but very different piece. In some way I shall be reacting to what people tell me about recycling by separate layering in the music, or by some other abstract means. The latter piece will act subliminally, in a quiet way, upon the shoppers. Unlike the stadium piece, the Tesco's music will probably be played as a straight CD with no need to have someone mixing sounds as, being an indoor site, I can not see any interest in reacting to atmospheric conditions. There is, however, an opportunity to create a two-layered approach - one for the long mall and one for the store itself. Each piece will inform the other and, ideally, a further level will be in evidence to anyone who experiences this installation and the one at the stadium. I intend the stadium piece to be played for at least four or five games ( longer if possible ). The Tesco installation ought to be played at least twice a day for a week. |
